CMS HETS Update: Action May Be Required for Michigan Chiropractors
What’s Changing
CMS is transitioning HETS (the HIPAA Eligibility Transaction System) to a new management system effective May 11, 2026. HETS allows Medicare providers, suppliers, and clearinghouses to check beneficiary eligibility in real time using 270/271 transactions.
Who Needs to Act?
This change affects your office if you, your billing software, or your clearinghouse uses HETS to obtain Medicare eligibility information.
If you currently check eligibility manually through the WPS SNAP (Secure Net Access Portal) website, this update does not apply to your office.
If you have questions or are unsure whether this applies to you, please contact your clearinghouse or vendor first. They can confirm whether they pull information from HETS and, if needed, provide their Unique ID (this is a 4-digit code).
For HETS enrollment issues, contact WPS at 1-866-234-7331 (Option 1) or the MCARE Help Desk at 1-866-324-7315.
For Providers Who Need to Complete Enrollment in the New HETS System
Michigan providers are served by WPS as their Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC). Enrollment takes three steps:
- Contact your clearinghouse or vendor to request their CMS HETS Unique ID (this is a 4-digit code).
- Complete the HETS EDI enrollment form at: WPS EDI Express Enrollment by entering the required fields.(leave the “termination date” empty).
- Attest as an authorized or delegated official for your organization.
You’ll need your PTAN, billing NPI (individual or group, whichever you use for Medicare billing), the vendor’s Unique ID, and an email address.
If You Miss the Deadline
After May 11, eligibility requests from unenrolled NPIs will be rejected with an AAA error code 41. You can still check eligibility manually through the WPS provider portal, but electronic verification through your vendor will not work until enrollment is corrected.
This information is based on current CMS guidance.
